Brian Urlacher rumors: Bears haven’t ruled out re-signing LB

After a somewhat messy breakup, could Urlacher return to the Bears? Team chairman George McCaskey isn’t ruling it out.

In March, the Chicago Bears announced they were moving on without linebacker Brian Urlacher, but team chairman George McCaskey hasn't completely ruled out the idea of Urlacher returning to the Bears.

Chicago general manager Phil Emery and head coach Marc Trestman would ultimately make the decision, but McCaskey did reach out to Urlacher following the news that Chicago was moving on. While he made it clear he won’t impact the final decision, McCaskey said he was “heartbroken” over the fact a deal could not be reached.

“I said going into the process that I’d be heartbroken if he didn’t come back and I am -- our whole family is,” McCaskey said, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. “Brian has been the face of the franchise, an outstanding Bear on and off the field.”

Assuming the two sides could move past the earlier negotiations and public comments, it is still hard to imagine Urlacher returning to Chicago. Since negotiations with him broke down, the Bears filled out their linebacker depth chart by signing D.J. Williams and James Anderson. Urlacher was unwilling to accept a one-year contract worth a maximum of $2 million in March and it's highly unlikely Chicago would increase its offer now.
