NFL free agent news: No offer sheet for Victor Cruz, Matt Ryan contract talks break off

Nobody made a play for Victor Cruz on the restricted free agent market, while the Falcons and Matt Ryan will wait a while before making a deal. Oh, and Terrell Owens is open to coming back.

— The restricted free agent deadline passed Friday night — you probably didn’t notice, since nobody ever actually uses the restricted free agent deadline — and it was quiet. That’s disappointing news for Victor Cruz, who might have hoped a team would sign him to an offer sheet, forcing the New York Giants to either match or let him walk. For now, he’ll have to either sign a tender that will pay him under $3 million or hold out until the Giants pony up.

— The Falcons were talking with Matt Ryan about extending his contract, but they’ll take a break — they’re going to focus on the draft, then deal with Ryan. It’s probably not worrisome, as the team does seem interested in reaching terms with Ryan rather than having him play out the final season of his contract.

— Terrell Owens, now 39, told David Kaplan of Comcast SportsNet Chicago that he’d be interested in a comeback, and that the Bears wouldn’t be the worst option for him. Windy City Gridiron was not amused.

The question is, can he even play? No team’s wanted to find out in two years if he could play in the regular season (the Seahawks released him prior to the 2012 season and he was never signed in 2011) and in 2013 he’ll be all of 40 years old. Plus, he’d have to contribute on specials - that’s not been something he’s done in his career. So, still hanging the “I’m Not Interested” sign.— With Rob Ryan switching the Saints to a 3-4 defense, New Orleans will need to switch some of their personnel around. The upcoming draft could be a great opportunity for that. Sean Payton, now back in charge, says the team will focus on defense in April. However, he added a caveat — that best player available could come into play.
