Jets draft rumors: New York wants to trade down

The Jets are looking to trade out of the No. 9 spot in the 2013 NFL Draft, but they may have some trouble finding a willing partner.

The New York Jets are looking to trade down in the 2013 NFL Draft, according to Rich Cimini of ESPN New York. General manager John Idzik has reportedly informed the rest of the NFL that the Jets are interested in acquiring extra draft picks in exchange for the No. 9 overall draft selection in the first round.

Trading down makes sense from the Jets' perspective. Many of the players that they have been linked to at No. 9 -- for example, cornerback Dee Milliner or wide receiver Tavon Austin -- could very easily be available a few spots down the board. The Jets may struggle to find a willing trade partner, however.

At No. 9, there may not be a single player that teams will be clamoring for. Teams have been rumored to be looking to trade up for one of the draft's three elite left tackles -- Luke Joeckel, Eric Fisher or Lane Johnson -- but all three are expected to be gone well before the Jets' pick.

Teams may be enticed to move into the top ten for West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith. Of the teams picking below the Jets, none seem to be in desperate need of a quarterback, however. The Jets’ best bet may be an earlier-than-expected run on defensive tackles or pass rushers causing a team to make a panic move. The strong depth of front seven defenders in this year’s draft will make such a trade difficult, however.

If the Jets are able to pull off a trade sending Darrelle Revis to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in exchange for the No. 13 overall pick (and perhaps more), it will make trading out of the No. 9 spot even more imperative. Unfortunately for the Jets, there doesn't appear to be an easy way out of the position.
