NFL news roundup: Darrelle Revis trade headlines weekend

Revis Island is officially moving to Tampa. What other news made headlines around the league Sunday?

Instead of focusing on draft preparations for the upcoming week, the main headline around the NFL Sunday involved cornerback Darrelle Revis and his new city to call home. After months of trade discussion, the New York Jets finally dealt Revis to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

After the initial report broke of New York allowing Revis to visit with Tampa, the impending deal didn’t take long to be agreed upon. The Bucs sent their No. 13 overall pick for upcoming NFL Draft, along with a conditional fourth-round selection for 2014 to the Jets in exchange for one of the league’s top defenders.

Revis agreed to a six-year deal worth $96 million with Tampa as part of the process. He didn’t receive any guaranteed money, but the contract makes Revis the highest-paid defensive back in league history.

The trade dominated NFL news Sunday, so here are a few other stories you might have missed.

Redskins looking at Quentin Jammer

Quentin Jammer met with team officials in Virginia Sunday night. The Redskins still need help at cornerback, even after re-signing DeAngelo Hall. Jammer is past his prime at 33, but he can play on the outside and provide depth for a Washington secondary that ranked 30th in the league last season. A deal wouldn't cost much, which is exactly what the Redskins need after suffering from a cap penalty.

Aaron Hernandez heading for PUP list?

After recently undergoing shoulder surgery, Aaron Hernandez might be placed on the physically unable to perform list to start training camp. His recovery time is around four months, so the start of the season shouldn't be in jeopardy. Don't be surprised to see him sitting out prior to the season's start.

Rams not trading Rodger Saffold

When St. Louis signed Jake Long, reports began to indicate Rodger Saffold wanting out of town. His move to right tackle wasn't exactly welcomed at first, but now it appears Saffold is content with his new position. As the National Football Post noted, "The expectation inside the organization is Saffold will be a part of the team for a long time." He won't be going anywhere soon.

Dolphins could replace Dan Carpenter

Miami is reportedly high on Florida's Caleb Sturgis and Florida State's Dustin Hopkins, according to Ben Volin of The Palm Beach Post. Carpenter is owed over $3 million for 2013. After missing two field goals to cost the Dolphins games against the Jets and Cardinals last year, his job appears to be in jeopardy.
