The New Orleans Saints needed to upgrade on one of the worst pass defenses in the league. They seem to have found their man in the draft, taking Texas safety Kenny Vaccaro with the 15th overall pick.
2013 NFL Draft results: Saints get ‘quality defensive talent’ in Kenny Vaccaro
Find out what SB Nation’s Saints blog has to say about the selection of Kenny Vaccaro.
Dave Cariello of Canal Street Chronicles is happy with the pick, noting that the massive run of offensive linemen early is making defenders drop in the first round:
Fate was on the side of the Saints, as teams ahead of them continued drafting tackles and guards, leaving quality defensive talent still on the board. Interesting, the Saints passed on both Shariff Floyd and Jarvis Jones. That should show you how much they value Vaccaro.
At the 2013 NFL Scouting Combine the 6'1", 218 lbs. Vaccaro ran a 4.63 40-yard dash, bench pressed 15 reps of 225 pounds, had a 38 inch vertical, a 121 inch broad jump, and was the top performer in the 20-yard shuttle with a time of 4.06 sec.
Considered the top safety of the 2013 class, Vaccaro should be able to step in and immediately contribute to a secondary that badly needed an infusion of talent.
