Pittsburgh Steelers sign LaRod Stephens-Howling

The Steelers add another piece to their running game, signing scatback LaRod Stephens-Howling to a one-year deal.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed running back LaRod Stephens-Howling to a one-year deal, according to CBS Sports'Jason La Canfora.

Stephens-Howling, 27, was originally drafted by the Arizona Cardinals in 2009, where he spent the past four seasons. the 5'7, 180 pound back was mostly used on special teams, where he became one of the better return men in the league. He led the NFL in kick return yards in 2010 with 1,548, and has three touchdowns over his career.

Used sparingly as a runner, Stephens-Howling never got more than 100 carries in a season until 2012, when the Cardinals were devastated by injuries in the backfield. He ended up rushing for 357 yards, four touchdowns and 3.2 YPC in five starts.

The Steelers are trying to address the running game after Rashard Mendenhall, Jonathan Dwyer and Isaac Redman all disappointed last season. Stephens-Howling should be a contributor on special teams and third downs.
