Tim Tebow expected to be released by Jets

After being acquired in 2012, it now looks like Tebow will be leaving New York.

The New York Jets are expected to cut quarterback Tim Tebow, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network during its 2013 NFL Draft broadcast. The New York Daily News echoed the report. Addressing their need for a passer, the team selected Geno Smith in the second round of the NFL draft. Tebow was acquired last year in a trade with the Denver Broncos, but no longer fits into the Jets' plans under new general manager John Idzik.

Tebow’s arrival in New York brought the polarizing player into the biggest media spotlight. The fan-favorite quarterback had just taken the Broncos to the playoffs, and it was expected that he could provide a different look for the Jets’ offense. Used primarily as a short-yardage runner, his 2012 season was problematic. Tebow was unable to run on teams (102 yards on 32 carries), and he was equally ineffective in the passing game — throwing for just 39 yards on the year.

Mark Sanchez will likely remain on the roster, as the Jets are still saddled with his large contract. Moving forward with Geno Smith, they also have veteran David Garrard on the roster — making the position too crowded for another signal-caller.

It remains to be seen where Tebow will land. It's popular to predict the Jacksonville Jaguars would welcome the former local star, but the organization has been open about their disinterest in him. Instead, the Jaguars will look to give Blaine Gabbert another chance in 2013 under new head coach Gus Bradley, after electing to pass on selecting a QB in the 2013 draft.
