Antoine Winfield rumors: Cornerback still deciding between Redskins, Vikings

Antoine Winfield is still weighing his free agent options, but he isn’t expected to make a decision until at least next week.

Free agent cornerback Antoine Winfield has drawn interest from a few teams, but he isn't expected to make a decision until at least next week, according to Dan Wiederer of the Star Tribune.

The Vikings released Winfield earlier this offseason, but remain in the mix to re-sign him. In addition to Minnesota, the Washington Redskins have made a strong push to sign Winfield, with the Denver Broncos showing interest, as well. Even with multiple teams showing strong interest, Winfield may not receive the contract he's looking for. He is asking for a one-year deal worth as much as $5 million, according to Tom Pelissero of ESPN 1500. With very little room to operate under the salary cap, neither the Vikings nor Redskins are likely to be able to afford his asking price.

Winfield was set to earn $7.25 million with the Vikings next season before Minnesota released him in March. Minnesota attempted to re-work his contract before the release and has made a strong push to re-sign him after. members of the Vikings front office have been in daily contact with Winfield’s representatives, according to Pelissero.

The Redskins re-signed DeAngelo Hall recently, but are still interested in signing Winfield. There is a "high mutual interest" between Washington and Winfield, according to Mike Jones of the Washington Post. The Redskins, however, have very little salary cap space available and may not have many options to create enough to sign Winfield.

The 35-year-old Winfield is entering his 15th season in the NFL. He started 15 games last season, finishing with 101 tackles, 12 pass deflections and three interceptions. Winfield has a reputation as an excellent run defender. He has also played well in the slot and could fit with a team as a nickel defender.
