Bengals acquire QB John Skelton off waivers from Cardinals

The Bengals already signed Josh Johnson as a backup quarterback to Andy Dalton, but on Wednesday they also acquired John Skelton off waivers from the Cardinals.

The Bengals acquired quarterback John Skelton off waivers from the Cardinals on Wednesday, according to The Cincinnati Enquirer's Joe Reedy.

The Bengals lost the backup quarterback they had used over the past two seasons, Bruce Gradkowski, to the Steelers in free agency shortly after the beginning of the new league year. They then signed Josh Johnson, formerly of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Cleveland Browns as Andy Dalton's new backup.

The addition of Skelton will add some competition at the reserve position because it’s unlikely that both he and Johnson will make the final roster. Skelton was a fifth-round pick in 2010 by the Cardinals out of Fordham. He has only played in 20 games during his three years in the league, starting 17 of them.

The Bengals seem content with Dalton, who is entering his third year, as he has led them, with the help of a tough defense, to the playoffs two years in a row. However, they would like, just as any other team would, a capable backup in case the worst should happen.

In his three years in the NFL, Skelton has completed 320 of 602 passes for 3,707 yards, 15 touchdowns and 25 interceptions for a career passer rating of 63.
