NFL free agency 2013: Charles Woodson not in demand

The veteran free agent hasn’t heard from, well, anybody this offseason.

Charles Woodson was released by the Green Bay Packers in mid-February. Since then, as he said on the NFL Network Friday morning and as reported by NFL.com's Ian Rapoport, the veteran cornerback-turned-safety hasn't gotten a whole lot of, if any, interest from the league so far this offseason.

Here’s some of what Woodson said (via Rapoport):

Woodson is 36 years old and coming off a season in which he missed nine regular season games with a broken collarbone. The 2009 NFL Defensive Player of the Year was released by Green Bay because of the strain the five-year, $55 million contract they signed him to back in 2010 was putting on their salary cap, especially with the looming mega-dollars they're about to spend on quarterback Aaron Rodgers and linebacker Clay Matthews. But age and production were concerns with Woodson as well, and the Packers believed their young secondary was advanced enough to continue along without one of their unquestioned defensive leaders.

He may not be hearing from anyone now, but training camps remain months away from opening. The NFL Draft is later this month. Teams will more-clearly know their yet-unaddressed or unknown areas of need as the season crawls closer.

It may be surprising to hear that a player with Woodson’s pedigree isn’t fielding even a phone call or two, but that could be because teams already know what they would be getting with him. They probably also know that he would come at a discount. It’s reasonable that, after a few more laps around the free agency pool and a dive into the NFL Draft, teams in need will look Woodson up. For the NFL, there’s plenty of time to wait. And that likely means the same for Woodson.
