Darrelle Revis ‘not optimistic’ about trade from Jets

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were considered the leading candidate to land Darrelle Revis in a trade, but recent reports suggest the cornerback is “not optimistic” about a deal getting done.

New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis is "not optimistic" about the chances of a trade to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network. Tampa Bay was considered the leading candidate with enough ammunition to land Revis this offseason.

At this point, it’s clear that Revis isn’t necessarily unhappy being with the Jets, but that they aren’t able to get him signed to the contract that he wants. He can opt out of his contract after the 2013 season and hit free agency, which is why the Jets have been interested in trading him.

But the interested teams have been few and far between. This offseason saw a relatively strong free agent class when it comes to the cornerback position, and many potential suitors for a Revis trade have since looked elsewhere.

Still, Revis is one of the best defensive players in the NFL and he would surely help another team right now. The Buccaneers have plenty of cap room to get him signed to a deal, and that is why they were after him in the first place. However it seems like the Jets are asking for too much in compensation. If they are unable to get a deal done prior to the NFL Draft, they won’t be able to secure any 2013 draft picks for Revis.

Tampa Bay holds the No. 13 overall pick in the upcoming draft, and it seems likely the Jets would want that pick included in a trade for Revis. At this point, that might just be a deal-breaker for the Buccaneers.
