Minnesota Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier remains optimistic that free-agent cornerback Antoine Winfield will re-sign with the Vikings rather than sign with another team, according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press.
Antoine Winfield rumors: Vikings coach Leslie Frazier wants CB to return
Minnesota Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier is optimistic that free-agent cornerback Antoine Winfield will remain with the Vikings.
Frazier remains in contact with Winfield, and is hopeful that Winfield will end up staying put in Minnesota.
“We’re all human,” Frazier said after the Minneapolis Sports Collectible and Autograph Show on Sunday. “We all like to know we’re wanted. I’ve tried to make that clear to him. I’ll let him know, ‘If you’ve got any questions, you know how to reach me.’ ”
“I don’t know what direction he’s leaning, but I’m hoping he’ll come back and be a Viking,” Frazier said.
Minnesota surprisingly released Winfield on March 12. Winfield was set to earn $7.25 million in 2013, and despite being the best cornerback against the run in 2012, the Vikings decided that was too much for him going forward.
Winfield immediately drew interest from the Washington Redskins -- but the Redskins are cash-strapped, thanks to the salary cap penalties levied on them by the NFL. The Seattle Seahawks also have interest in Winfield, and will host the free-agent cornerback this week.
A decision by Winfield could come as soon as this week, after Winfield took time off to go on a vacation with his family last week. With his options apparently whittled down to either Washington, Seattle or Minnesota, Winfield could make up his mind shortly after his visit with the Seahawks.
