Oakland Raiders sign Andre Carter to 1-year deal

The Raiders re-signed the veteran defensive end to a one-year deal on Tuesday.

The Oakland Raiders re-signed defensive end Andre Carter to a one-year deal on Tuesday according to Josina Anderson. Carter served as a reserve on the Oakland defensive end last year, totaling 19 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and one forced fumble in 12 games in 2012. With Oakland only returning three starters from last year's defense, Carter could see an increased role next season.

Grading the Raiders: Defensive end

Carter, 33, is most effective as a pass rusher, with 78.5 sacks over his 12-year NFL career. Despite serving as a backup for the Oakland defense last season, he made the Pro Bowl back in 2011 while with the New England Patriots, registering 10 sacks that year in just 14 games.

The Raiders are completely rebuilding their defense this year and Carter helps to offer a bit of continuity. The only starters remaining from 2012 are safety Tyvon Branch, linebacker Miles Burris and defensive end Lamarr Houston. Oakland signed defensive end Jason Hunter earlier this offseason; Carter and Hunter should compete for the starting spot opposite Houston unless Oakland drafts someone early in the 2013 NFL Draft.
