Kevin Kolb contract: Bills quarterback paid like a backup

Kevin Kolb’s contract with the Bills is not as big as it originally seemed and suggests he will serve as a backup in Buffalo.

The Buffalo Bills officially signed quarterback Kevin Kolb to a two-year contract on Monday, but the deal ended up being for much less than the originally reported $13 million. Kolb is only guaranteed to make $1 million in 2013 and has a total base salary of $6.1 million according to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, with the rest of the reported $13 million coming in incentives and escalators.

Now that all the details are out on Kolb’s contract, as Brian Galliford of Buffalo Rumblings points out, it is clear the Bills are paying him like a high-end backup. This suggests that the Bills will take a good look at the best quarterback available with the No. 8 overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. In the most recent mock draft from Mocking the Draft, Matthew Fairburn has the Bills taking West Virginia wide receiver Tavon Austin in the first round and waiting until the second round to take a QB, at which point he believes they will pick Matt Barkley.

This could leave Kolb and Tarvaris Jackson competing for a roster spot. The winner of the battle may start some games in 2013, but would be seen as a placeholder for whatever rookie the Bills decide to draft.
