Dawan Landry signs with New York Jets

After losing safety LaRon Landry to free agency, the Jets found the next best thing and signed his brother to take his place.

The New York Jets found a familiar player to take the place of safety LaRon Landry, signing his brother Dawan Landry according to Manish Mehta.

LaRon played one year for the Jets, earning a Pro Bowl selection and parlaying that into a lucrative contract with the Indianapolis Colts this offseason. Unable to re-sign LaRon, the Jets found a player with a similar skillset who has familiarity with the Jets' defensive system and happens to have the same name on his back in Dawan. Drafted by the Ravens in 2006, Dawan Landry played under Rex Ryan and Jets defensive coordinator Dennis Thurman for three seasons in Baltimore.

Landry was cut by the Jaguars this offseason after two years as a starter in Jacksonville; last season he totaled 100 tackles with one interception. Landry isn't a coverage specialist, but does his best work as an eighth man in the box focusing on stopping the run. The Jets still need another starting safety to pair with Landry, having lost LaRon, Eric Smith, and Yeremiah Bell this offseason.
