John Abraham rumors: DE wants to play full-time again, per report

Abraham and teams aren’t on the same page about how much the defensive end has left in the tank.

US PRESSWIRE

Free agent defensive end John Abraham is still undecided about his football future. A few tweets earlier this week led to speculation that he may retire, only for news to surface that he could be joining the Tennessee Titans. Abraham was cut by the Atlanta Falcons on March 1, just one year into his three-year contract extension.

The 35-year old Abraham is taking his time with the decision, and the biggest factor is going to be playing time, according to Pro Football Talk. Abraham still sees himself as an every down defensive end who can play 60 or more snaps per game. But most teams envision a role in which Abraham only plays around 25 snaps each week. Of course, Abraham doesn’t want to be paid as a part-time player.

Any thought of Abraham returning to the Falcons, if he even wanted to, is tempered by the fact that Atlanta brought in former New York Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora. While Umenyiora is also on the downside of his career, his presence would eat into Abraham's playing time as well. On the flip side, the Titans have Kamerion Wimbley and Derrick Morgan entrenched at their defensive end spots, so cracking the 60-snap mark wouldn't be easy.

Until Abraham agrees to take a reduced role and salary, he will remain a free agent.
