RGIII has NFL advice for Baylor teammate Terrance Williams

Terrance Williams has been getting advice on being a rookie from an old friend and current rival.

The Dallas Cowboys and the Washington Redskins aren't on the best of terms as division rivals and mortal enemies, but that didn't stop Robert Griffin III from giving some good advice to Cowboys' rookie wide receiver and former Baylor teammate Terrance Williams.

“[He said] just continue to do you and don’t change the way you are,” Williams said. “Be happy with your capabilities and show what you can do. I just really took that to heart the most.”

Griffin and Williams know each other well. Williams caught 59 passes for 957 yards and 11 touchdowns during Griffin’s 2011 Heisman campaign. In 2012, Williams flourished as the Bears’ No. 1 target with Nick Florence at quarterback, catching 97 passes for 1,832 yards and 12 touchdowns. For his efforts, Williams was the the seventh wide receiver taken in the 2013 NFL Draft, hearing his name called in the third round with the No. 74 overall pick.

Williams is expected to become the Cowboys' No. 3 receiver on the depth chart this season behind Dez Bryant and Miles Austin. Given the injury histories of both of those players, there is a chance that Williams will be called to play an even bigger role at times. Williams said that he is minimizing distractions in preparation.

“I try to keep my distractions down to a minimum,” Williams said. “I’m good with just talking to [a few close friends]. As far as the whole outside thing, I try to keep that down, just do my job first and family and friends come second.

“[Baylor coach Art Briles] did a great job of showing us to work first and the fun is second.”
