Branden Albert expected at Chiefs minicamp

Branden Albert is expected to show at Chiefs minicamp Monday, where he will enter offseason workouts as the presumptive starter at left tackle.

Branden Albert will waste no time showing up for the Kansas City Chiefs' offseason workouts. Head coach Andy Reid said that he expects Albert to show up to minicamp Monday for the first voluntary sessions for veterans beginning Tuesday, according to the SB Nation blog Arrowhead Pride.

Albert has signed the team's franchise tender, and is expected to be the Chiefs' starting left tackle this season. The team took Central Michigan offensive tackle Eric Fisher with the No. 1 overall selection in the 2013 NFL Draft, but he is currently penciled in as the starter at right tackle.

Albert's long-term status with the Chiefs is still unclear. Under the franchise tag, he'll become an unrestricted free agent in 2014 unless he signs an extension before then. The Chiefs were in serious negotiations on a trade that would send Albert to the Miami Dolphins, but talks fell through on draft weekend. Since then, there has been little news on trade talks with the Dolphins or any other teams in the league.

The Chiefs envision Fisher as their left tackle of the future, but in the mean time they apparently feel comfortable letting him spend a season getting his feet wet on the right side. They reportedly drafted Fisher, in part, because they felt he would be a better fit for the right side than No. 2 overall pick Luke Joeckel.
