Collin Klein leaves Texans minicamp without contract offer

Collin Klein did not receive a contract offer from the Texans after their rookie minicamp. Now he may have to reconsider his future as a quarterback.

USA TODAY Sports

Collin Klein is still without a contract after participating in the Houston Texans' rookie minicamp. The former Heisman Trophy finalist went undrafted in the 2013 NFL Draft before being brought in by the Texans on a trial basis. Without a contract offer, his future in the league is unclear.

“No, I did not sign,” Klein said in an interview with FOX 26 Sports before catching a flight. “I think they’re working through some things.
“I feel very good that I put my best foot forward and just so grateful they gave me the opportunity.”

Klein finished third in the 2012 Heisman voting behind Johnny Manziel and Manti Te'o. Despite an impressive college career at Kansas State, however, he was not regarded as an elite quarterback prospect entering the draft. Klein has excellent athleticism for his big body, but his passing mechanics left much to be desired when scouts watched him on tape, during Shrine Bowl practices and at the NFL Combine.

As with Tim Tebow, many have suggested that a position switch is in order. At 6'5, 226 pounds, he has the bulk to potentially make a move to tight end or try his hand as a large possession wide receiver. Klein is still holding out for an opportunity to play under center, however.

“It’s just what I love to do,” Klein said. “I love to throw the football, compete out there with my teammates. I love the mental part, the strategy you have to have at that position.”

Both Texans head coach Gary Kubiak and backup quarterback Case Keenum praised Klein’s progress during the workouts, as well his mental attitude. Klein says that playing quarterback is in his heart. Unfortunately, his window to play the position may be closing.
