Peter King thinks Jets could trade Mark Sanchez

Peter King thinks Mark Sanchez isn’t long for New York if Geno Smith wins the starting quarterback job before Week 1 of the 2013 NFL season.

The New York Jets could consider trading Mark Sanchez if Geno Smith wins the the starting quarterback job in training camp, according to Peter King in his Monday Morning Quarterback column for Sports Illustrated. King doesn't mention any sources in his column, though it's not hard to imagine the Jets cutting ties with Sanchez considering his rocky last few seasons in New York.

Smith was considered by many to be the best quarterback in the 2013 NFL Draft. The Jets may have gotten a steal when he landed to them in the second round at No. 39 overall. Though Smith was not considered a perfect prospect, his athleticism and passing accuracy give him starting potential. Few will be surprised to see Smith take over the reins of the Jets offense this season.

Sanchez was signed to a three-year contract extension before the 2012 season. He then went on to have one of the worst seasons of his four-year career. Sanchez completed just 54.3 percent of his passes for 2,883 yards, 13 touchdowns and 18 interceptions. His 66.9 quarterback rating was the second-lowest among 32 qualifying NFL quarterbacks, and his career-worst since his rookie season.

King suggests that Sanchez would be worth a low-round draft pick in a trade. Otherwise, the Jets could consider releasing Sanchez, though they would take a roughly $13 million cap hit in the process.
