David Garrard to retire, per reports

David Garrard will retire from football, according to reports. He signed with the Jets in March in hopes of competing for a starting job, but was once again dogged by injuries.

David Garrard will retire from football, according to reports. Ian Rapoport reported earlier Wednesday afternoon that the veteran quarterback told two players that "he no longer plans to be with the Jets":

Garrard signed with the Jets in March to add depth behind Mark Sanchez, and perhaps even compete for the starting job. He probably did not count on the Jets drafting Geno Smith in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft, however. Smith was considered a first-round talent by many entering the draft. In addition to crowding the depth chart, he is also expected to challenge Sanchez for the reins of the offense.

Garrard would have entered his 11th season in the NFL with the Jets, the first nine with the Jacksonville Jaguars, and then a training camp last year with the Miami Dolphins. He has not thrown a pass in a game since 2010, however. He made the Pro Bowl in his last full season, but was released by the Jags before the 2011 season due in part to injury concerns, elevating rookie Blaine Gabbert into a starting role.

Garrard took the 2011 season off to have surgery on a herniated disk, and prepare himself for the 2012 season. After signing with Miami, he was released before the regular season yet again after it was revealed he would have to undergo arthroscopic surgery.

The injury problems apparently followed Garrard to New York. He finishes his career with 16,003 passing yards, and 89 passing touchdowns to 54 interceptions.
