Bruce Irvin suspended 4 games for violating NFL performance-enhancing drug policy

The 2012 first round pick won’t be eligible to play in the regular season until October.

Kirby Lee-US PRESSWIRE

Seattle Seahawks pass rusher Bruce Irvin has been suspended four games for violating the NFL's policy on performance enhancing drugs, according to Adam Caplan. Irvin will be eligible to return on Monday, Sept. 30 following the team's game against the Houston Texans.

Irvin wil be allowed to participate in all offseason activities and will be able to play in preseason games. The suspension was for Adderall, according to Dave Mahler. Irvin did not appeal his suspension, and judging from his statement to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, he has accepted the punishment.

“I am extremely disappointed in the poor judgment I showed and take full responsibility for my actions,” Irvin said.

The former West Virginia standout burst onto the scene as a rookie, collecting eight sacks playing a situational role as a ‘LEO” pass rusher in the Seahawks’ defense. He was considered a reach when Seattle drafted him No. 15 overall in the 2012 NFL Draft but exceeded expectations due to his explosiveness off the edge.

The Seahawks may have seen this coming, as they added Michael Bennett and Cliff Avril in free agency, adding depth to an already solid pass rush. Both players should provide some pressure off the edge in Irvin's absence, but the Seahawks will certainly miss the athleticism their former first-round pick has shown so far in his career.

In an offseason that has been considered one of the strongest of any team in the league, the Seahawks just got dealt their first bit of adversity.
