Daryl Washington arrested following domestic violence incident

Washington was coming off his best season as a pro in 2012, one where he was awarded Second-Team All-Pro honors, and named by his peers as one of the NFL’s top 100 players. He finished last season with 134 tackles, and 9.0 sacks -- both career highs. The NFL has made no announcement on punishment of their own, typically avoiding judgement until the legal process takes course.

Daryl Washington has been arrested for an alleged domestic violence incident that occurred Wednesday afternoon. Per Fox affiliate KSAZ, Washington has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault after a dispute with the apparent mother of his child allegedly turned to violence Wednesday afternoon.

Ugly news of Washington’s alleged incident broke Thursday after the woman, apparently an ex-girlfriend of Washington and the mother of their five-month-old child, called the Phoenix Police Department Wednesday afternoon. She alleged that a dispute over visiting the child led to Washington choking her. Washington had reportedly filed a motion in court to allow him to see the child. Police couldn’t track down Washington Wednesday night and he didn’t show up to an interview with police Thursday, but has now been arrested and taken into custody, with bail set at $4,200.

The police released a statement regarding the investigation:

Washington is already set to serve a four-game suspension to open the 2013 season for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. This altercation could further endanger his status and availability for next season; however, it is clearly still too early to know exactly what will come of this investigation.
