Eric Wright reportedly on short leash with Buccaneers

Eric Wright will have to stave off stiff competition and keep his nose clean if he hopes to be a member of the Buccaneers beyond 2013.

Matt Stamey-US PRESSWIRE

The 2013 season will be a make-or-break year for Eric Wright with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, according to Pewter Report. Wright is currently penciled in as the Bucs' starting cornerback opposite Darrelle Revis, but coaches may be quick to cut ties should the veteran struggle like he did last season.

Wright was reportedly almost released at the end of last season, but was given another chance after meeting with head coach Greg Schiano and general manager Mark Dominik. Wright suffered through nagging injuries before being suspended four games late in the year for violating the league’s policy on banned substances.

After adding Revis and safety Dashon Goldson during the offseason, the Bucs' secondary should be much better than the unit that gave up nearly 300 yards passing per game last season. Hopefully, for Wright, he can thrive in a reduced role. He will have to hold off stiff competition from rookie Johnthan Banks, however. The second-round pick has more length and fresher legs than the 27-year-old Wright.

If Banks does surpass Wright on the depth chart, the veteran could move down to become the slot defender in nickel formations. The role would suit him well, and could be the best way for the Bucs to maximize the use of their personnel. There is reason for hope in Tampa Bay, but a lot depends on Wright being a reliable team player in 2013.
