D.J. Hayden injury: Raiders CB has abdominal surgery

The Raiders will be without first-round pick D.J. Hayden for the rest of OTAs.

USA TODAY Sports

D.J. Hayden underwent abdominal surgery last week and is expected to miss the remainder of the Oakland Raiders' offseason training activities, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. The good news is that the rookie cornerback should be healthy enough to rejoin the team for training camp. Hayden was hospitalized with an abdominal injury last week.

Hayden’s injury raised more concern than it might for the average NFL player. Hayden nearly lost his life this past November at Houston after tearing his heart cavity in a freak collision during practice. He underwent successful heart surgery and was cleared to play before the 2013 NFL Draft, but considering the severity of the situation, any possible setback is understandably treated with extra seriousness.

Hayden was selected with the No. 12 overall pick this past April. He is expected to start immediately in a Raiders’ secondary that, last season, gave up 236 yards passing per game and 28 touchdowns through the air to just 11 interceptions.
