Mike Goodson returns to Jets OTAs

New York Jets running back Mike Goodson returned to team OTAs on Tuesday after being held out due to off-the-field issues.

Running back Mike Goodson was back at practice with the New York Jets on Tuesday, according to the New York Daily News. Goodson returned to OTAs after being held out by the team and the NFL following an arrest on weapons and drug possession charges.

Goodson recently pled not guilty to those charges, which included unlawful possession of a handgun, possession of a loaded handgun, possession of a hollow-point bullet, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Given that the Jets have released two players for drug-related arrests this offseason, many questioned whether or not Goodson would be the third to get released following his incident. His appearance at OTAs likely means that he’s not going anywhere, pending how his court proceedings actually play out.

In March, Goodson signed a three-year, $6.9 million contract as a free agent. He received a $1 million bonus at the time, and many expect him to be a big factor in the running back picture going forward. Shon Greene, the starter last season, departed in free agency and Goodson will join a roster that includes Chris Ivory and Joe McKnight.

The primary role will likely come down to Goodson and Ivory. Goodson rushed for 221 yards in 12 games with the Oakland Raiders last season, and had a per-carry average of 6.3 yards. Ivory rushed for 217 yards in six games last season, and had a per-carry average of 5.4 yards.

It’s clear that Goodson will play a big role and have a shot to be at the top of the depth chart in New York -- provided he can stay out of trouble and provided the trouble he’s already in doesn’t force the team or the NFL to take disciplinary action. But for now, Goodson is back at OTAs and learning the offense.
