Ed Reed injury: Texans safety could miss part of training camp

Ed Reed’s worst-case scenario with minor hip surgery will cause him to miss part of training camp, although this likely won’t bubble over into the regular season like a similar injury in 2010.

USA TODAY Sports

Ed Reed’s hip surgery could cause him to miss some of training camp, but it won’t keep the eight-time All-Pro free safety from missing the start of the regular season for the Texans.

The 34-year-old’s surgery to fix a labral tear in the hip happened two weeks ago and was revealed last Friday. Nobody surrounding the team seems overly concerned about it, though:

It seems as if the team acted quickly to ensure the issue was dealt with in the offseason rather than letting it spill over to more important months.

Reed is the consummate professional. Although the team would obviously like him to be present for OTAs and all of training camp, missing them probably won’t have much of an effect on his ability to be fully prepared for the start of the regular season, his first with the Texans.

The safety, now in his 12th season, missed the first six games of 2010 after undergoing hip surgery. The 2004 Defensive Player of the Year won his first Super Bowl this past season with the Ravens, but signed a three-year, $15-million deal as Baltimore threw the majority of their cap space behind Joe Flacco. Reed had 15 passes defended and four interceptions in the regular season, followed by three breakups and another pick in the playoffs.
