Pittsburgh Steelers right tackle Mike Adams was stabbed on Friday night in an apparent robbery attempt, as reported on Saturday. Adams wasn't in critical condition at any point, but he will be missing some time. Adams will be out about six weeks and should be able to return for training camp, according to further reports.

Adams is expected to be the team’s starting right tackle in 2013, one year after he was drafted in the second round of the 2012 NFL Draft. Adams was given the team’s Joe Greene Great Performance Award last year as the team’s top rookie player.

The San Francisco 49ers hired former NFL head coach Eric Mangini as a "senior offensive consultant" on Saturday. Mangini has been out of coaching for almost three years now, and after multiple failures as a head coach, many figured he'd come back to coaching or consulting in some form.
As noted by Niners Nation, it’s an interesting title, given Mangini’s specialty on defense:
Mangini’s experience is on defense, and while this job is as an offensive consultant, Mangini can use his defensive knowledge to help the 49ers offense. One can look at the Kansas City Chiefs’ decision to hire former Nevada head coach and Pistol formation inventor Chris Ault as a defensive consultant. In Ault’s case, the rise of the Pistol in the NFL means he can provide defenses with instruction on how to handle it.
The New England Patriots waived wide receiver T.J. Moe on Saturday. Moe tore his Achilles tendon in practice with the team and didn't get much of a chance to show what he had to offer. He received the most money of any Patriots undrafted free agent signing this offseason. Given that the team is always looking for more help at wide receiver, Moe had a solid chance to make the final roster and possibly even earn some playing time had he not been injured.
If he clears waivers, which is likely, the Patriots will likely place him on the injured reserve list. An Achilles injury typically comes with at least six months of recovery time.
St. Louis Rams running back Isaiah Pead was suspended for one game after violating the NFL's substance-abuse program, but the team knew that it was coming, as reported on Saturday. Pead is expected to take a bigger load this season with Steven Jackson departing for the Atlanta Falcons in free agency.
The small amount of missed time could be costly for Pead, as noted by Turf Show Times:
With Jackson gone now, Pead was expected to get every opportunity to take assume a bigger role in the offense, bigger than the 10 carries he had in 2012. The Rams drafted Zac Stacy this year, but Pead was still the favorite to work the second half, possibly even the bigger half, of a time share.
The Cincinnati product will at least get to practice and work with the team. Still, any amount of lost snaps for a player trying to cement his place on the roster are costly. Once again, the door is open for Richardson, Stacy or someone else to usurp Pead’s place in the rotation.
