Leach has been one of the NFL's premier fullbacks since arriving in Baltimore in 2011. He has been named to two consecutive All-Pro teams while paving the way for two of Ray Rice's best seasons statistically. While Leach isn't an offensive threat himself, he's a player that makes the rest of the offense better -- and wouldn't be on the market long if released.
Entering the final year of a three-year contract, Leach is set to make a base salary this season of $3 million, with a cap hit of $4.33 million. This makes him the league's highest-paid fullback, which runs into a problem with the Ravens' tight cap situation. The issue was an expected scenario, as Baltimore selected fullback Kyle Juszczyk in the fourth round of the draft. Juszczyk was hailed to be the best run-blocking fullback available in 2013.
The Ravens and Leach could still find a way to re-work his deal, but based on recent reports it looks like they will part ways. It’s a risky situation to tinker with a winning roster too much, but general manager Ozzie Newsome has larger plans to keep the team solvent moving forward.
