Brandon Carswell injury: 49ers WR tears ACL

Signed as a short-term option while the team gets healthy, the 49ers find themselves with another injured receiver.

Brandon Carswell of the San Francisco 49ers has torn his ACL one day after signing with the team, according to Kevin Lynch of the San Francisco Gate. Jim Harbaugh's team isn't wasting time, as they are quickly exploring other options.

The team had hoped Carswell would get them through the season while Michael Crabtree recovers from a torn Achilles and Mario Manningham continues to rehabilitate following a torn ACL. Carswell was an undrafted free agent in 2012, and he spent time with the Oakland Raiders. The former USC receiver was a minor investment, proof positive the 49ers aren't looking to make a large financial commitment on a player.

One name has already surfaced as an option moving forward. According to Christian Gin of Examiner.com, the team worked out Austin Collie on Thursday -- though there has been no news on a signing at this time. Collie had a promising start to his career dashed by a series of head injuries. A reliable 500-600-yard threat in Indianapolis, he only appeared in one game last year before being sidelined once again due to injury.

If healthy, Collie would add to a new-look receiving corps in San Francisco, and could be a great third option. However, his injury history makes it a questionable decision on a team needing some reliability and stability from their pass-catchers.
