NFL news: Mike Adams out 6 weeks; Alex Smith impressing Chiefs

Mike Adams will miss six weeks after being stabbed in an apparent robbery attempt, Alex Smith has been impressing the Chiefs at OTAs and more you may have missed from Saturday.

Jason Bridge-US PRESSWIRE

On Saturday, Pittsburgh Steelers offensive tackle Mike Adams was stabbed during an apparently robbery attempt. It was the biggest news of the day, but it was quickly reported that Adams was doing fine and that he was only expected to miss about six weeks of action. That puts him back in time for training camp, which is fortunate, as he's expected to take over the starting right tackle job this season.

Here’s what else went down on Saturday:

Mangenius returns to coaching with San Francisco

Eric Mangini is regarded as one of the better defensive minds in recent memory, but he crashed and burned as head coach of the Cleveland Browns and New York Jets. But he's getting another crack at coaching in the NFL, as the San Francisco 49ers hired him on as a "senior offensive consultant," on Saturday.

It’s an interesting position, given that, again, Mangini is noted as a defensive-minded coach. As pointed out at Niners Nation, however, defensive coaches have plenty to offer an offensive staff, such as information on how he’d go about defending that offense if he were going up against it.

Smith doing well in OTAs for Kansas City

Alex Smith was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs this offseason, and that franchise's hope to turn things around sooner rather than later rests on his shoulders. Fortunately, Smith is impressing in just about every aspect at OTAs. The quarterbacks coach, Matt Nagy, was particularly happy with Smith and what he brings to the table. Smith has a playoff win under his belt, and getting the Chiefs to that point would be a huge accomplishment given their league-worst record last season.

Atlanta moving around Biermann

Atlanta Falcons defensive coordinator Mike Nolan has ran all kinds of defenses in the past, but Atlanta has primarily used a 4-3 in recent years. Nolan seems to be adding some 3-4 looks to the scheme though, and as noted on Saturday, that could mean defensive end Kroy Biermann gets more snaps standing and in coverage. Biermann did some of that last year, but given the additions at defensive end this offseason, he could be looking at many more snaps at outside linebacker.

Pats waive Moe

The New England Patriots waived wide receiver T.J. Moe on Saturday. Moe tore his Achilles tendon and will likely miss around six months. As an undrafted free agent, that's a huge amount of time to lose. He was New England's highest-paid UDFA on top of that, meaning he had a good shot at making the roster. If he goes unclaimed, the Patriots will likely place him on injured reserve.
