Cowboys sign 1st-round pick Travis Frederick

The Dallas Cowboys signed first-round pick Travis Frederick to his rookie contract. He was the last remaining unsigned draft pick for Dallas.

Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

The Dallas Cowboys have signed rookie first-round pick Travis Frederick, according to Calvin Watkins of ESPN Dallas. Frederick, a center out of Wisconsin, signed for four years, with a team option for a fifth year, which is standard among first-round picks under the collective bargaining agreement.

Jon Machota of The Dallas News reports that the contract is worth $6.9 million with a $3.37 million signing bonus. Frederick was the last of Dallas’ picks to sign this year, but that also has been typical around the NFL.

Frederick was considered a reach at the back-end of the first round, where the Cowboys took him. Many experts suggested that Frederick would still be available when Dallas picked in the second, and some even suggested he would be there in the third round.

That said, the Cowboys are making a heavy investment in quarterback Tony Romo, and they expect to keep him in action until he decides to call it a career. Getting a guy like Frederick, who has been working with the first team in minicamp and should continue his role through training camp and the preseason, is always a priority. It's likely that Frederick starts on the offensive line in Week 1, and now there's no contract talks to distract either side.
