Michael Vick more mistake-prone than Nick Foles in Eagles OTAs

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen says that Michael Vick was more mistake-prone than Nick Foles during Philadelphia Eagles OTAs.

USA TODAY Sports

The quarterback battle is alive and well in Philadelphia, with both Michael Vick and Nick Foles trying to win the job for the upcoming season. One area where Foles has an advantage over Vick is decision-making, at least according to ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

On Tuesday, Mortensen appeared on the NFL32 program and said it was his understanding that Vick made more mistakes “decision-making wise” than Foles did during OTAs and minicamps. The two quarterbacks took their turns with the first-team offense throughout training camp, and if Mortensen is to be believed, Vick likely made a few bad decisions with the football.

Mortensen also stated that he doesn’t expect head coach Chip Kelly to hand the starting job over to Vick for any reason other than Vick winning the quarterback battle. The exact phrase Mortensen used was that the player who wins will be whoever can “buy in and execute what (Kelly) wants done.”

Most have figured that Vick would win the job simply because Kelly’s offenses have always relied on athleticism, and there isn’t really a quarterback in the NFL who is more athletic than Vick, even if he’s lost a step. Foles is athletic, but he’s nowhere near Vick’s level in that department, and is closer to being a pocket passer.

At this point, it's anybody's guess who will actually be the starting quarterback. It seems unlikely that rookie Matt Barkley would win the job, though. Barkley is in the competition as well, and he figures to be the starting quarterback of the future, but for now he's got a long way to go and is just enjoying the "least amount of pressure" of his football career.
