Jamaal Charles: Alex Smith is a ‘Super Bowl quarterback’

Kansas City Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles said Alex Smith is a “Super Bowl quarterback.”

USA TODAY Sports

Kansas City Chiefs running back Jamal Charles said new quarterback Alex Smith is a "Super Bowl quarterback," according to NFL.com. Charles said Smith has a "great arm," and that he can "stay consistent."

On top of that, Charles said that Smith has been winning most all of his career, which isn't technically true. Smith's first few seasons in the league were marred by inconsistent coaching and a lack of weapons on offense. Prior to the start of the 2011 season, Smith was actually getting his "last chance" with the San Francisco 49ers.

Smith went on to put up 3,144 yards and 17 touchdowns against just five interceptions. That entrenched him as the starter heading into 2012 and he posted a stellar 70.2 completion percentage through 10 appearances. Unfortunately, Smith went down with an injury and Colin Kaepernick took over. The 49ers elected to stick with Kaepernick, leaving Smith to backup duties.

In other words, after resurrecting his career, Smith did nothing to lose his job per se, which is why the Chiefs paid so much to trade for him this offseason. If he can keep a steady completion percentage and protect the football, the Chiefs, who had the worst record in the league last season, should be able to take steps toward respectability.

Smith, 29, should still have plenty of good years left if his 2011 and 2012 seasons weren’t flukes. Kaepernick was always going to take over for him in San Francisco. Charles is showing faith in Smith, who is the unquestioned starter in Kansas City. Still, even if Smith is a Super Bowl-caliber quarterback (he fell just short of making it there in 2011), the Chiefs have a lot of holes to fill to get Smith there.
