Kellen Winslow to take tryout with Jets

Free agent tight end Kellen Winslow will take a tryout with the New York Jets on Tuesday.

Tight end Kellen Winslow will take a tryout with the New York Jets on Tuesday, according to The Associated Press. Winslow will workout during the team's minicamp, and this is the first significant action for him as a free agent this offseason.

Winslow is just barely on the right side of 30 at 29 years old, but he's been plagued by injuries over the past few seasons. He played in just one game for the New England Patriots in 2012, catching a single pass for 12 yards. The previous season, he had 75 receptions in 16 games with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, putting up 763 yards and two touchdowns.

At his most productive, Winslow had 82 receptions for 1,106 yards and five touchdowns with the Cleveland Browns in 2007. That season marked his first and only trip to the Pro Bowl.

Winslow makes sense for the Jets, though. He may have injury concerns, but he's the only proven tight end remaining on the market at this point, and the Jets lost starter Dustin Keller in free agency. The tight ends currently on New York's roster are Jeff Cumberland, Dedrick Epps, Chris Pantale, Konrad Rueland, Mike Shanahan and Hayden Smith.

Cumberland is the only one who has put up stats of any significance, as he had 29 receptions for 359 yards and three touchdowns with the Jets last year. The other players combined for 13 receptions and 107 yards. If Winslow is healthy and shows it on Tuesday, he could definitely be an option.
