NFL news roundup: Kellen Winslow to try out with Jets, Dwayne Gratz in line for starting job

Kellen Winslow will try out with the New York Jets on Tuesday, cornerback Dwayne Gratz is set to start for the Jacksonville Jaguars and more you may have missed from Saturday.

Free agent tight end Kellen Winslow will try out with the New York Jets on Tuesday. The news came late Saturday, and it's not exactly surprising. Winslow is basically the only productive tight end remaining on the free agent market and the Jets lost starter Dustin Keller in free agency. Winslow, if healthy, should be able to impress enough to earn a contract and if so, the starting job. There's not a whole lot after him, as noted at Gang Green Nation.

Here’s what else you might have missed from Saturday:

Lions want to extend Stafford sooner rather than later

Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford is going to need a contract extension soon. The team wants to get him extended before the start of the regular season, or they plan on working it out after the season, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reported on Saturday.

Stafford is in a weird position because he’s clearly among the better quarterbacks in the league, but played poorly along with the rest of the team last season. It was a disappointing year in which the Lions finished 4-12, including eight straight losses to end it. His contract number could be all over the place, so good luck, Detroit.

Gratz to start for Jacksonville

Dwayne Gratz has started taking first-team reps at cornerback at Jacksonville Jaguars minicamp. Gratz was a third-round selection in the 2013 NFL Draft and given the place the Jaguars are currently in (once again in rebuild mode), it's not surprising to see him getting starting reps. Gratz winning a starting job is basically a foregone conclusion at this point.

Herzlich taking starting reps

Mark Herzlich has had a tough road to where he's at now. He battled, and beat, bone cancer in college and made the New York Giants roster as an undrafted free agent. Now, he's taking starting reps during the team's voluntary minicamp despite having been a role player to this point. It's unclear if Herzlich will win the job in the end but he has certainly come a long way and this is yet another step in an impressive journey.

Young released from jail

Seeing Titus Young in the NFL again at this point seems like a longshot. The former Detroit Lions wide receiver seems to be suffering from some kind of severe mental illness. Pro Football Talk reported late Saturday that Young has been released from jail and that he’s waiting to see a psychiatrist, so there’s that. One thing is for certain: Young won’t find a team until he gets some serious help.
