There's a quarterback battle going on at New York Jets minicamp, but early impressions indicate incumbent starter Mark Sanchez doesn't have a whole lot to worry about. Considering rookie Geno Smith "hasn't blown anybody away," the team may have "little choice," but to start Sanchez, according to Rich Cimini of ESPN New York.

Early indications at New York Jets minicamp have one beat writer believing that Mark Sanchez will be the starter at quarterback in Week 1.

Smith, taken in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft, projects to be the starter of the future. Many hoped he’d be the starter of the immediate future and take over for Sanchez this season. But Cimini is unconvinced, saying that it wouldn’t be wise to throw Smith into the line of fire with the current state of the Jets. “Like it or not, it’ll be Sanchez to start,” he writes.
Of course, Sanchez could easily lose his starting job mid-season, especially if the Jets are out of the playoff race. Let’s face it, that’s not the most unlikely of scenarios at this point.
Sanchez has been getting steadily worse throughout his career. He didn’t play too poorly in 2011, with 26 touchdowns against 18 interceptions, but still only completed 56.7 percent of his passes that year. This past season, he threw just 13 touchdowns against 18 interceptions and completed only 54.3 percent of his passes, a shockingly low number for a starting quarterback.
It seems like only a matter of time before Smith is given the opportunity to start with the Jets, but early indications point to him sitting on the bench as the primary backup in Week 1.
