Mark Sanchez vows to win Jets QB job

New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez has vowed to win the starting quarterback battle over Geno Smith.

USA TODAY Sports

New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez has vowed to win the starting quarterback job. As noted by Rich Cimini of ESPN New York, Sanchez recently stated that he is "going to win" the job. When talking about the competition, Sanchez said "It really doesn't affect my confidence or anything like that. We're competing for something. All right, I'm going to win."

Sanchez's confidence is definitely a good thing, because it's going to be a tough battle with rookie Geno Smith. By all accounts, Smith is raw and has some work to do, but Sanchez has been playing very poorly the last few seasons.

In 2012, Sanchez had a completion percentage of just 54.3 with 13 touchdowns against 18 interceptions. He has never posted a completion percentage above 57 percent in a single season, and the interceptions and fumbles have been a big issue. Last season, he fumbled the football nine times, a career high.

In other words, it’s the big mistakes that hurt Sanchez. If he can remedy those things, then he might have a shot at keeping his job. The competition between Sanchez and Smith is expected to extend into the preseason, and it’s likely that the Jets want Smith to make a serious run at the job.
