NFL news roundup: Jahvid Best released, Brian Cushing cleared

The Detroit Lions released running back Jahvid Best, Houston Texans linebacker Brian Cushing was cleared for training camp and more you may have missed from Wednesday.

Andrew Weber-US PRESSWIRE

The Detroit Lions released running back Jahvid Best on Wednesday. Best missed all of last season with a concussion and still has not received medical clearance to play football. It's unclear if Best will call it a career at this point, or if he hopes that he'll end up on another team eventually. Regardless, it's tough to see, given that Best played well before going down with the injury.

As noted at Pride of Detroit, the move was expected:

This move was really inevitable, as it became clear last year that Best probably wasn’t going to play football again. His health is more important, and Best doesn’t seem to have any hard feelings about being released.

Here’s what else you may have missed from Wednesday:

Cushing cleared for camp

Houston Texans linebacker Brian Cushing has been cleared to participate in training camp this month. Cushing missed minicamp and OTAs while recovering from an ACL injury he suffered early last season. He played just five games last season due to the injury, but his clearance prior to the start of training camp is a great sign. His spot on the team was essentially guaranteed given his previous high level of play, but the extra practice can only help after such a long layoff.

Richardson is pain-free

Cleveland Browns running back Trent Richardson has "no pain at all" in his right leg. Richardson missed minicamp in June due to a strained muscle in his shin, and many have worried that he wouldn't be able to participate in the start of training camp. Richardson seems likely to be ready from the onset at this point, which is good given that the Browns have an all new coaching staff and currently aren't sure who their 2014 starting quarterback will be.

Reed targeting Week 1 return

Texans safety Ed Reed won't be ready for the team's training camp later this month, but general manager Rick Smith believes Reed can return for Week 1 on Sept. 9 against the San Diego Chargers. Reed is recovering from offseason hip surgery and has seemed somewhat pessimistic about a Week 1 return in the past.
