Golden Tate contract: Seahawks yet to approach WR about extension

The three-year veteran’s future with Seattle appears uncertain at this point.

USA TODAY Sports

The Seattle Seahawks "haven't moved to extend" wide receiver Golden Tate, ESPN's Chris Mortensen told the NFL32 program Tuesday (as noted by Rotoworld). Tate is entering the final year of his rookie contract.

Tate fell short of expectations over the course of his first two seasons in the league, with just three touchdowns and a little more than 600 yards over that time, but he picked things up last year, catching 45 passes for 688 yards and seven touchdowns.

He tended to disappear for long stretches of time before making a big first down reception or touchdown grab, as evidenced by his career-high average of 15.3 yards per catch. He was perhaps a bit too inconsistent for the Seahawks, who are trying to give second-year quarterback Russell Wilson the best chance to succeed in a tough NFC West.

Seattle made a trade for Percy Harvin this offseason, which pushes Tate outside of a starting role given the presence of Sidney Rice on the roster. Given Harvin's natural inclination for the slot receiver role, Tate will likely see the field a good bit anyway, but his play next season might be working more towards a value boost for free agency and less about a possible extension with the Seahawks.
