Eric Wright trade: Deal voided due a failed physical, Bucs release CB

Eric Wright isn’t headed to San Francisco in a trade after all. The deal was voided after he failed his physical with the 49ers.

The trade sending Eric Wright from Tampa Bay to San Francisco hit a snag on Monday when the cornerback failed his physical with the 49ers. As a result, the deal was nullified and Tampa Bay will instead release Wright, according to Albert Breer of NFL Network.

The 49ers and Buccaneers agreed to a deal on Friday which would have sent Wright to San Francisco in exchange for a conditional late-round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. Wright was limited by a nagging Achilles' tendon injury last season, but it's unknown what caused the failed physical. He was also arrested on suspicion of DUI on July 12 according to Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times. Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee said the failed physical could raise suspicions the 49ers were not aware of Wright's arrest. If San Francisco found out about the alleged incident after agreeing to the trade, a failed physical would be one way for them to get out of the deal.

Tampa Bay was reportedly set to release the 27-year-old cornerback before agreeing to the trade. They will release him now, saving $1.5 million in salary cap space. Wright signed a five-year $37.5 million deal last offseason, but the remaining guaranteed money in the deal was voided when he was suspended for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing drugs. Wright restructured his contract with the Bucs this offseason, reducing it to a one-year deal worth $1.5 million and no guaranteed money.
