Buccaneers sign Mike Williams to 5-year extension

The Bucs finally locked up the young wideout after rumors of negotiations all summer long.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and wide receiver Mike Williams have come to terms on a five-year, $38.85 million contract extension that will keep Williams in Tampa through 2018, according to Pro Football Talk.

Talks have reportedly been ongoing with Williams for months, with the two sides wrapping things up in time for camp.

Williams burst onto the scene as a rookie in 2010, hauling in 65 receptions for 964 yards and 11 touchdowns. Since then, the Syracuse product has been quite consistent, catching 65 and 63 passes over the last two years for 771 and 996 yards, respectively.

Tampa Bay is making quite a commitment to its receivers after spending $55 million on free agent Vincent Jackson during the offseason last year. Sander Philipse from Bucs Nation says Jackson will remain the offensive focal point:

Williams flourished when he was the number two receiver, but struggled as the number one receiver in 2011. WIth Vincent Jackson under contract, though, Williams won’t be asked to be the focal point of the team’s passing attack. The Buccaneers now have their starting wideouts under contract for the foreseeable future.

The 26-year-old has played in all 48 games since entering the NFL as the team’s fourth round selection in 2010.
