Titans rookie LB pulls family from burning car

Just when you thought the NFL was never going to have another positive story, this happens.

Daniel Shirey-US PRESSWIRE

With all the talk about Aaron Hernandez this past month, it seemed the NFL would never have something to be proud of off the field.

Then Jonathan Willard, a Tennessee Titans rookie linebacker, comes along and restores hope. On Tuesday, Willard was driving to Titans training camp when he spotted a car on fire with a woman, a dog and three children inside, according to tigernet.com.

“I saw this car in front of me, and it had all kinds of black smoke coming out of it,” Willard said. “I tried to speed up and get up next to the car to let them know the car was on fire.”

After getting the driver’s attention and motioning her to pull the car over, Willard and another man pulled everyone out to safety as the car was engulfed in a blaze. All involved walked away uninjured. Willard also walks away a hero. Per the story:

“When she pulled over, the car was really on fire at that point,” Willard said. “The driver, she acted like she was in some kind of daze or something. She told me that she didn’t stop because she didn’t think it was her car that was on fire. Another guy stopped, and we managed to get the kids and the dog out and get them to safety, and then I finally got the woman out.”

The rookie comes into camp as an undrafted free agent after having a stellar career with the Clemson Tigers. Last season, Willard had 95 tackles and three sacks along with 10.5 tackles for loss, leading the team in that category.
