NFL news roundup: 49ers sign Eric Reid, Justin Blackmon has surgery

The San Francisco 49ers signed Eric Reid and Justin Blackmon had groin surgery. Read on for more you may have missed on Friday.

Al Bello

The San Francisco 49ers signed first-round draft pick Eric Reid on Friday. Reid was the last of San Francisco's draft picks to sign, but was just the 10th first rounder to put pen to paper thus far this offseason. Getting draft picks signed is supposed to be easier at this point, given the rookie wage scale set in place by the collective bargaining agreement.

As noted by Niners Nation, Reid is likely to start in San Francisco’s elite defense:

During the team’s minicamp, Reid rotated with free agent addition Craig Dahl and last year’s primary backup and special teams ace C.J. Spillman. When training camp gets started in late July, it’s a safe bet that we’ll see more and more of Reid working out with the starting defense.

Here’s what else you might have missed from Friday:

Blackmon has surgery

Justin Blackmon recently underwent groin surgery. It was minor surgery, and the Jaguars wide receiver was limited near the end of the team's recent minicamp. There's no word on whether or not Blackmon will be able to participate in training camp when it gets underway in late July. Blackmon is suspended for the first four games of the 2013 season regardless, but he is allowed to practice with the team.

Bush played through injury

Chicago Bears running back Michael Bush played through a broken shoulder last season. Bush had a so-so year as the primary backup to Matt Forte, and played through multiple games with the injury, which could explain his lackluster performance. Bush will look to improve on his paltry 3.6 yards per carry average this season as he returns to 100 percent health.

Football heading to Daytona?

Daytona International Speedway is getting some renovations, and among the goals during these renovations: making the venue suitable for football. Apparently the Jacksonville Jaguars are among teams being considered to potentially play a game there. Needless to say, that would be a few more fans than they're used to.
