Cowboys DL Josh Brent released from jail

Josh Brent has been released from jail. He tested positive for marijuana in June, violating the terms of his bond agreement.

Josh Brent has been released after spending less than two weeks in jail for failing a drug test and violating his bond agreement. Brent was arrested for intoxicated manslaughter last December as the driver in a car accident that killed Dallas Cowboys teammate and friend Josh Brown Jr. Brent tested positive for marijuana in June, violating the conditions of his bond agreement. The failed drug test was his second since his indictment.

Brent is still awaiting trial for the incident. He was allegedly driving at speeds above 100 miles per hour when his car hit a curb and flipped. He failed a field sobriety test at the scene, and was found to have a blood alcohol content over twice the legal limit. Brown was unresponsive when police arrived, and later pronounced dead at the hospital. An autopsy showed that he was sober.

Brent had been walking free on a $100,000 bond, and is still on the Cowboys’ roster at the request of Brown’s mother. Whether he stays on the roster remains to be seen. While not technically barred from offseason workouts, Brent did not participate in OTAs or minicamp after being asked to stay away from the team.

The Cowboys open training camp on July 21. If not for his legal troubles, Brent could have been competing to participate in the rotation at defensive tackle in the Cowboys’ new 4-3 defense this season.
