Patrick Willis injury: 49ers LB hurts hand, will reportedly have X-ray

The Niners’ All-Pro linebacker is undergoing evaluation of a hand injury suffered during practice on Wednesday.

All-Pro San Francisco 49ers linebacker Patrick Willis will undergo an X-ray examination to determine the extent of an injury to his right hand, according to CSNBayArea.com.

Willis suffered the injury during the team's Wednesday practice. After colliding with fullback Bruce Miller during a blitz drill, Willis was examined by team doctors and sat out the remainder of practice with his hand wrapped in ice.

Niners fans should temper their concern, as Willis has a record of playing through hand injuries. He played with a cast on his broken right hand in 2007, not missing a single game. He played two games with a break in the same hand in 2010, only sitting out the third after the 49ers were eliminated from playoff contention.

Willis broke his middle finger during his final year of college, forcing to him to wear a cast through most of his senior year at Ole Miss. He went on to lead the SEC in tackles and earn the 2005 Dick Butkus Award.

A Pro Bowler in each of his first six years in the NFL, Willis racked up 120 combined tackles, two forced fumbles and two interceptions last season, leading the 49ers to Super Bowl XLVII.
