Keenan Allen injury: Chargers WR leaves practice for knee treatment

Allen is the third San Diego wide receiver to hurt a knee in training camp.

Christopher Hanewinckel-USA TODA

San Diego Chargers wide receiver Keenan Allen suffered a knee injury during practice on Tuesday, and had to be sent to the athletic trainer's room, according to Tom Krasovic of the San Diego Union Tribune. It's unclear if this is specifically related to the PCL injury that Allen suffered at Cal, but given that it cut his 2012 season short, it's a legitimate concern.

Allen was seeing extra work after Malcom Floyd suffered a knee injury of his own. Floyd's injury has been ruled a strain and no timetable has been given for a return, while Danario Alexander will miss most, if not all of the season, with an ACL tear.

It’s been a tough offseason for the knees of Chargers wide receivers.

Allen was a third-round pick in this year's NFL Draft. He was expected to earn some playing time this year, but his role became all that more important when Alexander and Floyd went down with injuries. If he's going to miss any significant portion of time, it could hurt his development considerably. Allen is a rookie, and needs all the practice and preseason time he can get.
