For now, at least, Mark Sanchez remains atop the depth chart as starting quarterback for the New York Jets. The team has announced that Sanchez will start the Jets' Saturday preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Jets QB Mark Sanchez will start vs. Jaguars
Rex Ryan has given the starting nod to Mark Sanchez over Geno Smith for the Jets’ Week 2 preseason game on Saturday.

The announcement is not at all that shocking considering the week that Geno Smith, Sanchez's competition for the starting spot, has endured. Smith injured his right ankle during last week's exhibition against the Detroit Lions, limping off the field after falling to the ground untouched. Then came reports that the rookie had his worst day of practice since the beginning of camp, a performance coach Rex Ryan termed "brutal".
Smith was taken by the Jets in the first round of April's NFL draft, and is expected by many to take the reins from the veteran Sanchez, who's become a lightning rod for controversy through four up-and-down seasons in New York.
Sanchez had a strong day against the Lions in the preseason opener, overcoming a pick six on his first pass to finish 9-for-10 for 125 yards and a touchdown. Smith went 6-for-7 for 47 yards before leaving the game.
