Jonathan Vilma injury: Saints LB to have knee surgery, miss rest of preseason

The Saints’ veteran linebacker will miss the remainder of the preseason but is expected to be ready to for Week 1.

US PRESSWIRE

New Orleans Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma will undergo surgery on his injured knee, which will keep him out of the remainder of the preseason, according to Adam Schefter. He is expected to return for the regular season opener.

Vilma missed six of the team's eight training camp practices and the preseason opener against the Kansas City Chiefs with what until now was an undisclosed injury. It was reported yesterday that the 10-year veteran was flying to Philadelphia to get a second opinion, a meeting that obviously did not go well.

The 31-year-old Vilma has a history of knee issues, having missed five games last season with a similar injury. He has undergone multiple knee surgeries over the past few years and hasn’t played a full regular season slate since 2010.

Vilma tallied just 37 tackles, one sack and one interception in 2012 while battling the injury as well as disciplinary action from the league for his role in the Saints bounty scandal.
