Barkevious Mingo injury: Browns say ‘nobody really knows’ when rookie will return

No timetable has been set for the rookie linebacker’s return from a bruised lung.

Ron Schwane-USA TODAY Sports

The Cleveland Browns are unsure when they will reacquire the services of first-round pick Barkevious Mingo, who has been on the shelf with a bruised lung since last Thursday. The rookie linebacker will sit out the team's scrimmage on Saturday, but a timetable for his return has not been set, according to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com.

Examinations of Mingo’s injury are “ongoing,” according to head coach Rob Chudzinski, and Mingo’s recovery period is a rather fluid situation.

“Basically, the bottom line with KeKe is nobody really knows,” said Chudzinski. “It’s just how his body is going to heal.”

In addition to that awful nickname, Mingo has been battling a bruised lung since injuring it during the Browns' preseason win over the Detroit Lions last Thursday night. Reports initially suggested he would be sidelined for just a week, but after spending two day's in the hospital, that prediction climbed to "at least two weeks."

It seems to be a rather mysterious injury, with no cause given by Mingo or the team up to this point. The former LSU Tiger told reporters he felt short of breath on the game’s opening kickoff and later coughed up blood on the sideline. He also recalls no heavy blow to the chest during the contest and doesn’t have the broken ribs that typically accompany the blunt-force trauma necessary to cause such an injury.

Whether the 2013 draft’s No. 6 overall selection will be ready to go in Week 1 of the regular season remains to be seen.
